Bill Madden, “Francesca”—Ladies and gentlemen, indie rock as it should be: acoustic guitar, electronic woofers as a rhythm section, various and innumerable noises as layering, and a slightly distressed, piercing tenor vocal. One can ponder over the melody for a long time, fingering the influences from all over the world, which are like beads on a string. An impressively complicated and mesmerizing arrangement! You want more and more of this music, flames in the fireplace, warm checkered plaid, mulled wine in a paunchy, thick-walled cup—and let it be nasty, almost-winter or late autumn outside. In this ambience, with this music, one can hold out ‘til the nuclear winter is over.
Bill’s latest album New Religion is varied and diverse, with much experiment of sound, rhythm and instruments. One cannot help but note that the Voice is in the foreground. Yes, that’s right, with a capital V. By the way, the album is available for free listening on Madden’s official site; and, if you are in a melancholic mood on some cold evening, listen to it. You will not regret it. I won’t say a word about the musician, this is not important. He should be listened to, only listened to.

Навязчивые, входящие в резонанс со стуком сердца, прилипчивые рифф и ударная партия. Но когда они перестают звучать, рука сама тянется к кнопке replay, выкидывая из плейлиста все остальные треки.
Bill Madden, “Francesca”—Инди, дамы и господа, рок-инди как оно есть. Акустическая гитара, электронные вуферы в качестве ритм-секции, разнообразные шумы, коим несть числа, в виде уплотнения и несколько измученный пронзительный тенор вокала. И мелодию можно рассматривать долго, перебирая, как бусики, нанизанные «с миру по камушку». Потрясающе сложная и завораживающая аранжировка! Хочется много-много такой музыки, горящий камин, теплый клетчатый плед, глинтвейн в пузатой толстой чашке - и пусть за окном будет мерзкая недозима-переосень. В такой компании и с такой музыкой можно переждать даже ядерную зиму.
Но последний альбом Билла New Religion не совсем равномерен: в нем много экспериментов со звуком, с ритмом, с инструментами. Но нельзя не отметить, что на передний план выведен Голос. Да, именно так, с большой буквы. Кстати, вся пластинка доступна для прослушивания на официальном сайте Меддена, и, если вам захочется немного погрустить холодным вечером, поставьте ее, не пожалеете. А про самого музыканта сознательно ничего не буду рассказывать, это все неважно. Его нужно слушать и только слушать.
