Bill Madden, it’s been quite a while. I checked and the last release was Child Of The Same God in 2008. Since then, years have passed without his work leaving my CD rack. Not that his work is boring, on the contrary, but ultimately because there is so much competition. Even if that were only the two or three releases I discuss every week. But now there is new work from this New York environmental activist: the title is New Religion.
All musical instruments on this album are played by him and producer Billy Mohler. When you do everything yourself, the real art is to make the result sound like a band and if I add that the necessary keyboard parts and electronically produced rhythms are used, this could be the introduction to a critical review. That, however, is not the case. Musically, Madden reaches back to the ‘eighties, when electronics were gaining a tighter hold on pop music. But he knows how to give it a twist. These pop songs, which, in the quiet moments, remind me somewhat of the older work of Peter Gabriel, grow with each playing.
Opener “What Is Ours” begins with the text ‘Lalalalala...’, but this puts you off balance, because there is enough substance in the subsequent lyrics. The first environmental declaration follows immediately:
"We are voyagers
Undeterred, unbowed
Who've come to tear
The status quo down".
Prize number is the Frankie Goes To Hollywood-like title number - I wonder how Holly Johnson is doing now? - that is not about religion but about money that destroys us.
New Religion is a socially critical album at a time when the economy seems to rule over us and for which - at least according to Madden - the bill is yet to be presented. Or there must be a change of course. It’s up to you.

Bill Madden, dat is al een tijd gelee. Als ik het nakijk was de laatste release Child Of The Same God in 2008. Er zijn sindsdien jaren voorbij gegaan dat zijn werk mijn cd-kast niet verlaten heeft. Niet dat zijn werk zo vervelend is, integendeel, maar uiteindelijk is er veel concurrentie. Al was het alleen al de twee tot drie releases die ik wekelijks bespreek. Maar nu is er nieuw werk van deze New Yorkse milieuactivist met als titel New Religion.
Op deze plaat worden alle muziekinstrumenten door hem en producer Billy Mohler bespeeld. Het is als je het zelf doet de kunst om nog als een band te klinken en als ik vertel dat er de nodige keyboardspartijen en elektronische geproduceerde ritmes aan te pas komen, dan zou dit de inleiding kunnen zijn naar een kritische recensie. Dat valt echter alleszins mee. Madden grijpt muzikaal terug naar de tachtiger jaren waar de elektronica steeds meer grip op de popmuziek kreeg. Hij weet er echter een goede draai aan te geven. Deze popliedjes, waarbij ik op de rustige momenten wel wat aan oud werk van Peter Gabriël moet denken, groeien per draaibeurt.
Opener "What Is Ours" opent met de tekst 'Lalalalala...', maar hiermee word je op het verkeerde been gezet, want tekstueel is er hierna genoeg te halen. Zo wordt het eerste milieustatement aansluitend gemaakt:

Prijsnummer is het Frankie Goes To Hollywood-achtige - hoe zou het eigenlijk met Holly Johnson zijn? - titelnummer dat niet over religie gaat, maar over geld dat ons verwoest.
New Religion is het maatschappijkritische album in een tijd waar economie ons lijkt te overheersen en waar we - althans volgens Madden - de rekening nog van gepresenteerd krijgen. Of het roer moet om. Het is aan jou.
